{PHOTOGRAPHY} Satya Naren for The Crisp White Shirt

A few months ago, on a particularly emotional day (James had just left after his first visit to Bombay), my friend Nelly decided to cheer me up by asking me to feature on her brand new website, The Crisp White Shirt, a digital journal documenting street style in the city, styled by Nelly and her partner, Aarthi.

Grateful for the distraction and for an excuse to get dressed up instead of sitting around in my sweatpants and moping, I plastered on a little makeup and did some basic prep as one would for any shoot.

Shortly, Nelly, Aarthi and their photographer, Satya descended on me, enveloping me in hugs and digging through my closet to style me in what was most ‘me’. Normally, this would be a cause for concern, mainly because my closet has a very specific organization system in place (hello, OCD). But since Nelly and I have known each other since college, she identified my style spot on and dug out the only things that could put me in a good mood – sequins, sequins and more sequins!

The cherry on top of this perfectly iced cake? She then pulled open my makeup drawer and told me to put on another oldie but a goodie, my favourite red lipstick. Within the hour, I was beginning to feel like myself again, and we took to the streets to get our shoot on.

The girls fussed over me with a few last minute details like hair and accessory placement between trial shots, and soon we were in full swing, with me posing, pouting and striking a pose while they kept the nerves at bay with bad jokes and gossip.

After the shoot was over, we all went out for Burmese food, where Satya showed us his work and discussed vintage cameras, while the girls filled me in on their plans for The Crisp White Shirt and interviewed me for the article that accompanies the pictures on their site.

The article went live on their website on my birthday a few months later, and was a sweet little surprise waiting for me when I got home from Harry Potter World with James. Read all the nice things they have to say about me in the original article here.

Oh, and speaking of nice, be a doll and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep updated with all the great work they do, and for some serious street style inspiration.

Hey Kiran, thanks so much. The sunglasses aren’t D&G. They’re an unbranded pair that belongs to The Crisp White Shirt team, on which they have stuck flowers! Great DIY idea! :)
